Chaos of Delight Episode 3

Charles Darwin wrote wonderful sentences, beautiful books and fabulous phrases and one of my favourite is when he describes his mind being a ‘Chaos of Delight’ after seeing many of the splendid lifeforms in a Brazilian forest.  And we have asked everyone who’s been involved in this App when they experience that ‘Chaos of Delight’. – Robin Ince

The universe forces us to think in new ways by exceeding the imagination of mere humans

Well, every time I view the universe I’m surprised.  In fact, I’m surprised if I’m not surprised.  The universe forces us to think in new ways by exceeding the imagination of mere humans and that’s…Darwin’s phrase ‘a chaos of delight’ is really perfect because if we just sat in rooms, as theologians and sometime philosophers do, then we’d get these sort of stale descriptions of reality.  It’s…every time you look at the universe it surprises you.  It forces you to reassess not only your place in the cosmos, but what you thought was natural and what you thought wasn’t.

So for me it’s not just a unique experience, it’s every single time I look at nature.  I look at the Hubble Space Telescope and see literally billions of galaxies – well I don’t see them all in one picture, but thousands of galaxies in the picture – billions of light years away; many of the stars in that picture no longer exist.  It forces me to start thinking about the universe in ways that inspire me and that’s why I try and convey that to others because it’s among the most exciting things you can experience as a human being.
