Science Moments of 2013 – Prof Jim Al-Khalili
I asked him about whether he really was surprised to win the Nobel Prize.
For me, the most incredible moment in science in 2013 involves Peter Higgs. Now I know a lot of other scientists will say it’s the Higgs boson but for me it was meeting Peter Higgs and interviewing him for my radio programme ‘The Life Scientific’, ah, he was on his way to Stockholm to pick up his Nobel Prize and he came into the studio and I asked him about whether he really was surprised to win the Nobel Prize.
And what was lovely was he opened up and said, ‘Actually, I sort of knew I was going to get it. I just felt I could be awkward because I can.’ And I thought, that’s fantastic. And he was very candid and I felt I’d got some sort of a scoop because everyone seemed to think he was this coy, shy gentleman. He’s not – he’s a crafty bugger!
