Heroes of Science – Episode 15

She would sit outside for hours and hours

I would say my [hero] - and you might think she’s too known but at the time she wasn't - is Caroline Herschel.  She was the first, or one of the first, woman astronomers.  She would sit outside for hours and hours, she wasn't just a tea maker, she was the writer, she catalogued so much without…William was just a stargazer, he wasn't an astronomer.  And so I think it’s Caroline, just because of, well, the way…she didn't get the best start in life and the fact that she had the courage to go, no, do you know what, I’m going to do this.  She was one of the first women scientists.  I can’t even begin to imagine how petrifying that must have been.  So I would say Caroline Herschel.
